Nomination “Restoration of paintings”

The content of the nomination assignment is the development and implementation of a set of measures to restore the exposition condition of an artwork made in oil painting technique, based on the terms of reference, research requirements according to the presented situation and in accordance with the restoration requirements. As well as the creation of accompanying restoration documentation reflecting all stages of the work.

The assignment consists of several consecutive, time-limited and having its own characteristics of the stages related by common goals. It contains processes identical to the professional activity of the artist-restorer and allows participants to show research, artistic and practical skills and, of course, mastery to achieve the final result.

1. Procedure and general description of the practical work

Restoration of each work of art is a unique process that does not involve a single general technology, regulated by the general rules of restoration of paintings on canvas.

The process of restoring the exposition condition of a work of art includes such stages as:

Examination of the artwork. Development of practical restoration actions;
Carrying out technical restoration with step-by-step theoretical support of the work;
Carrying out artistic restoration with step-by-step theoretical accompaniment of the work.

2. Instructions for task implementation (technological operations)

The study of technical and technological features of the artwork, identifying and fixing of damages;
Development of practical restoration actions to recover the exhibition condition of the work of art based on the technical assignment and analysis of the state of preservation and the inherent technical and technological features of the work;
Maintaining and restoring the physical strength of the work of art, restoring the integrity of the foundation (the participant prepares the necessary compositions, solutions and adhesives at this stage on the basis of the materials provided), and compiling the accompanying reporting documentation;
Repairing the loss of soil (the participant independently prepares the necessary compositions, solutions and adhesives at this stage on the basis of the provided materials), compiling the accompanying reporting documentation;
Repairing losses of author's painting (the participant independently prepares compositions and solutions necessary at this stage on the basis of the provided materials), compiling accompanying reporting documentation.
